Autumn 1
English
This half term, the children have been looking at the story 'The owl that was afraid of the dark.' by Jill Tomlinson.
The children have really enjoyed following Plop on his journey to overcome his fears. The children got to visit a campfire just like Plop did in the story. They loved the experience day of the campfire, this really helped enrich the children's language. They enjoyed hot chocolate, sang songs, told silly stories and toasted imaginary marshmallows around the fire.
At the end of the unit children spent time planning and writing their own stories where a character was scared of something new. Take a look at the children's WOW work below!

Maths
In Maths, we have covered the following curriculum
- I can count in 2s from 0

The children have worked incredibly hard using different methods/strategies to support them. They should feel extremely proud of their achievements this term.
Science
We have been exploring the skills of working scientifically. The children have started to think of simple questions, carry out simple tests, talk about what they have found out by observing the experiment closely and recording this in their books. One experiment the children enjoyed was the raisin experiment.
I predict that the raisins in the tap water will float. I predict that the raisins in the fizzy water are going to sink. - Nicoleta

History
In History, the children have been exploring the question 'What was school life like when our grandparents were children?' The children have enjoyed learning about the 1960's and 1970's. The children were able to ask questions and find out what school life was like for Mrs Williams and Mrs Triscott.

Geography
In Geography, the children have been exploring the question 'What are local areas like on the other side of the world?' The children have compared our local area with a local area in Nairobi. They found Hounslow and Nairobi on a map and investigated what it means to be on the other side of the world. They have also thought about human and physical features within these local areas.

OPAL
The children have continued to love their new lunchtime play. They have the opportunity to access the sandpit, mud kitchen, sports equipment, small world, lego, drawing, reading, den building and loose parts.

PSHE
In Year 2 we have been thinking carefully about relationships. We have created a hand of trust to have at school and at home. This hand guides us to the people we can talk to when we are feeling worried about anything. We also introduced our worry monster which the children can use to feed their worries to.
RE
In RE, the children have been learning about belonging. They started the unit by looking at what they belong to by making a belonging shield. For example: family, sports clubs, school, religion etc. They then moved on to looking at Judaism and Islam in more detail comparing and discussing the similarities and differences between both faiths.
PE
In PE, we have been looking at the fundamental movements of our bodies. The children have enjoyed developing balance, stability and key skills such as: jumping, skipping and running in different directions. They have used these skills and implemented them into fun games.
In Gymnastics, the children have looked at performing shapes, rolls and balances. They have then joined the movements together to create a sequence. The children loved watching each other perform.

Music
Over the last 7 weeks our music lessons have been focussed around one song: Hands, Feet, Heart - a song that celebrates South African Music. The children have listened and appraised the song, completed fun musical games around the song and learnt to sing the song.
ART
In Art, the children have had a fantastic time exploring colour mixing and creating different textures. The children used these skills to create autumn creatures.
The children have also created lovely pieces of art work to remember special people.
Computing
We have been learning about E-safety and how we can stay safe online. We have learnt how to log on to our PurpleMash accounts and have started to explore the activities. We have started to look at algorithms within games. You can find these games on purple mash.
Harvest Assembly
A big highlight of the half-term was the children performing their harvest assembly to the school and their parents/families. The children sang beautifully, learnt actions to songs and read their lines perfectly. A huge well done to everyone involved!

Autumn 2
English
This half term the children have enjoyed learning about instructions. The children made their own bird feeders which they placed around the school grounds to attract more wildlife to our school. The children really enjoyed making them and eagerly waited at playtimes to see the different birds visit our school.
The children then made their own chocolate crunchy birds nests and wrote instructions for people to follow. Take a look below!
Maths
In Maths, this half term we have covered the following:

Science
In Science, this half term we have explored the uses of everyday materials. The children identified and compared the suitability of a variety of everyday materials, including wood, metal, plastic, glass, brick, rock, paper and cardboard for particular uses. They have found out how the shapes of solid objects made from some materials can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching.
The children have had great fun using their scientific skills by asking simple questions, observing closely, performing simple tests and gathering and recording data.
Geography
In Geography, we have continued to look at the question 'What are local areas like on the other side of the world?' The children's curiosity has led them to asking excellent questions and propelled them to finding out the answers/information.
History
The children have had a fantastic half term in History. They have continued to explore the question 'What was school life like when our grandparents were children?' The children were taken back in time and were immersed in to the life of a child in the 1960s.
My favourite part was when Mrs Williams told us about the 1960s. I loved dancing to 1960s music. - Katie

They have also looked at and compared the life of a child that went to Beavers in the 1960s/1970s to what it is like today.
PE
In PE, the children have been exploring rhythm in dance and controlling a ball within a small game.
RE
In RE, we have been learning about different types of celebrations within different religions. The children have also learnt about the Nativity within the Christian faith and put on a lovely show.

Art
In Art, we have used charcoal to create our own autumnal creatures. We have also used our knowledge fo colour mixing from last half term to create some wonderful autumn leaves.
DT
In DT, the children have designed, made and evaluated their own winter product. The children worked hard on designing a suitable functioning product for themselves, they selected tools, equipment and materials to join them together to create their winter bauble. Their products were lovely, take a look below!

Nativity

Spring 1
English
This half term the children have worked incredibly hard on writing their own version of 'Lila and the Secret of Rain'. The children loved learning about Lila and her home town in Kenya. The children created their own characters and problems they would face in their story. Once they had finished writing, the children spent time proof reading, editing and adapting their stories.
In Year 2 we have also looked at the story 'Man on the Moon' by Simon Bartram. The children were very excited to explore this text, and they were intrigued about Bob's adventure on the moon. Once the children had explored the text, they pretended they were visitors on the moon and wrote their own postcard about their trip.

In Maths, this half term we have covered the following:

- I can identify and represent numbers using different equipment, including the number line.
- I can estimate numbers using different equipment, including the number line.

Science
In Science, the children have been exploring the topic 'Living Things and their Habitats'.
The children have explored and compared the differences between things that are living, dead, and things that have never been alive. The children loved going outside and hunting for living things. They created different habitats and predicted which habitat the worm would like the best. They identified that most living things live in habitats which are suited to their needs. The children enjoyed a hands-on lesson researching a specific habitat and the animals and plants that live in it.
Geography
The children were sad to finish the topic 'What are local areas like on the other side of the world?' but they have gained a lot of knowledge.

The children have continued to explore the question 'What was school life like when our grandparents were children?' We compared Beavers in the 1960s to 2023. The children investigated pictures, diaries and behaviour books.
Spring 2 Art Gallery
PE
In PE, the children have been exploring fundamental movements and improving or working on their skipping skills.
RE
We have been looking at festivals within Judaism. The children explored the story of Moses and how it was important to the people of the Jewish faith, they discussed similarities and differences between the abrahamic religions and how they came to be.
PSHE
Our value this half term has been determination. The children are confident in speaking about the value and how to show it within the school community and their own lives. They also looked at keeping themselves safe at home and school and being able to say no.
Computing
In Computing, the children have been looking at spreadsheets. The children have focused on using copying, cutting and the pasting tool within the programmes.
Music

Spring 2
English
The children have enjoyed learning about their new topic this term ‘The Orangutans’. They have researched and collected lots of information about the endangered orangutans and the different rainforests that they inhabit.
The children have written impressive non-chronological reports on how to help save the orangutans and the negative impact that palm oil has on the rainforest and the orangutans. They have included lots of beautiful illustrations and facts. In their writing they have been continuing to edit their work and have been expanding on their use of punctuation through adding 'did you know questions' to make their work more interesting to the reader.
As the children were very passionate about SAVING the orangutans and the stopping of palm oil usage, we have had the opportunity to write to Mrs Smith about the use of palm oil in our school. The children wrote amazing persuasive letters that Mrs Smith replied to.

In Maths, we have been exploring the following curriculum:

Science
Children have been continuing to work scientifically this half-term through their new topic ‘Animals Including Humans’.
Children have enjoyed learning about the 5 groups of vertebrate animals and they have been working together to classify and group different animals using these characteristics. We have also investigated the basic needs of humans and animal and the different ways animals obtain their basic needs.

We have also enjoyed learning about different life cycles including humans. Children were able o investigate and see how different animals grow into adult versions.
Geography
This half-term the children enjoyed learning about our topic ‘What will we see on our journey around the world?’ They have enjoyed using different atlases, globes and Google Earth to explore the world and its continents and oceans.
History
In our history topic the children enjoyed starting our topic of flight and aviation. They have also been building their knowledge of significant individuals in history.
The children have explored the Wright brothers and their inventions of the first flyers as well as the different materials that they used to help create the first motor-operated aeroplane.
PSHE
Our value this half-term has been equality. The children have explored this value and what it means to them and to us as a school. They have explored how to manage their emotions and the different special people that are in the community to keep them safe.

In RE this half-term, we have been learning about stories in Christianity. The children have enjoyed exploring and learning about stories such as ‘The Lost Sheep’ and ‘The Prodigal Son’.
The children loved our trip to St Paul's Church and they were able to recall all the different features of the church that they saw.
Music
We have been learning A Reggae Song for Children by Joanna Mangona called ZooTime in our music lessons. Children have had interactive lesson where they found the pulse, rhythm and pitch of the song.
PE
The children have been continuing on refining their fundamental skills in our indoor PE lesson. In our outdoor session we have explored target games and have been using different equipment’s to develop our skills of throwing, rolling and striking towards a target.
Computing
In computing we have been continuing to learn about different algorithms and how we use them. We have been thinking about how to use digital devices and if different technology uses the Internet to work.

ARTS WEEK
In arts week the children entered into Wonderland and they looked beautiful all dressed up. Throughout the week they were able to part take in many different art activities and dance workshops. These included making a unique scrap book, designing their own guard cards from the queen of heart and printing (using different mediums) their own designs onto a table cloth.

Summer 1
English
In English, the children explored poetry. They were looking at the poem 'If I were in charge of the world'. They then adapted this poem and wrote their own version 'If I were in charge of the school'. The children wrote amazing poems that they should be very proud of. They were creative, funny and entertaining.

In Maths, this half term we have covered the following:

In science, the children have been observing plants grow, they have been able to investigate what a plant needs to grow and confidently talk about what they have found out.
History
In history, the children have been learning about the history of flight. They have been looking at different historical figures who had an impact on flight. They have explored The Wright Brothers first plane and looked at the design of the plane. The children really enjoyed going to the science museum to look at this in more detail.
Geography
The children have been exploring the world around them and learning about the oceans and continents. They have learnt fun songs and rhymes to help them.
RE
The children looked at special objects within sikhism. They looked at the khanda, how the khalsa was formed, the five ks, Guru Granth Sahib and the Gurdwara.
PSHE
Our value this half term was cooperation. The children took time embedding this into their lives inside the classroom and on the playground at break times and lunchtime.
PE
This term, the children took part in Games, Athletics and Team games. Great fun was had by all and the children really showed the value of cooperation within these lessons.
Computing
The children learnt about the importance of online safety and the important steps they must take to stay safe online!

The children really enjoyed their DT topic this half term. The children research, designed, made and evaluated their own summer salad.
